Abstract
Rad prikazuje povijest ljestvičnih nizova, polazeći od pretpostavke da na osnovu proučavanja "primitivnih" kultura možemo suditi o počecima tonalitetnog mišljenja. Prvi značajan trenutak bi u tom smislu bila pojava određenog, akustički punovrijednog tona, čija je osnovna karakteristika određena visina, a takav fiksirani ton služi kao čvrst oslonac sa kojeg se glas može udaljavati naviše ili naniže. Susjedni tonovi su nesamostalni i okupljeni oko fiksiranog tona kao oko zvučnog težišta, što predstavlja najraniji oblik tonalitetnog centra. U radu se obrađuju ljestvični sustavi naroda Kine, Japana, Koreje i Indije; starogrčki modusi, srednjovjekovni modusi, dur i mol i cjelostepena ljestvica.
