Abstract

Tema ovog rada su Četiri ritamske etide (Quatre Études de rythme) za klavir francuskog
skladatelja Oliviera Messiaena. Rad se temelji na analizi djela s fokusom na tretman ritma i
nove, originalne ideje koje Messiaen predstavlja u ovim etidama. S obzirom na neuobičajeno
mjesto koje ove etide zauzimaju u njegovom opusu, u radu se objašnjava kontekst njihovog
nastanka te Messiaenov eksperimentalni pristup skladateljskim tehnikama koje je koristio u
djelima, a koje su se pokazale izrazito utjecajnima na poslijeratnu generaciju skladatelja. Na
koncu, etidama pokušavam pristupiti iz perspektive izvođača te rasvijetliti koje sve tehničke
izazove etide postavljaju pred pijanista.

Abstract (english)

This thesis deals with the Four Rhythm Studies (Quatre Études de rythme) for piano by
the French composer Olivier Messiaen. The paper is based on the analysis of the
pieces with a focus on the treatment of rhythm and new, original ideas that Messiaen
develops in these studies. Given the unusual status that these studies occupy in his
oeuvre, the paper deals with the context of their origin as well as Messiaen's
experimental approach to the compositional techniques used in the pieces, which
proved to be extremely influential on the postwar generation of composers. Finally, I
try to approach the studies from the performer's perspective and shed light on all the
technical challenges that the studies pose to the pianist.
